Driver Training–Defensive Driving
The HSE driving improvement training is classroom-based training program that focuses on proactive techniques to prevent light-vehicle collisions in all driving conditions. The curriculum includes: traffic regulations; space awareness; visibility; time management; seeing zones; trained-eye lead time; eye movement, space management and effective attention getters; mental/physical preparedness; route selection and planning; mental disturbances; fatigue management; distractions (in and out of vehicle); unfamiliar equipment. The program can be tailored to meet most company-specific driving situations.
This course is recognized by Alberta Transportation Safety Board and achievement of a test score of 80% or greater can reduce three demerit points from an operator’s license in that province.
The objectives and outcomes for this course are to:
- Improve thinking and sharpen awareness
- Distinguish good drivers from the rest
- Remind drivers of the importance of vigilance when operating vehicles
- Provide an attitude check for drivers
- Instruct on pre-trip inspections and personal inspections
