Athey Wagon
An integral component of HSE’s blowout recovery operations is the Athey wagon. This specialized piece of equipment facilitates safe removal of debris from around a burning well.
To mitigate the risk of heat exposure and preserve structural integrity, HSE has equipped the unit with fire protection system designed to provide quenching water streams on demand. The HSE Athey wagon was built to accommodate the worst-case-scenario: a high-volume, high-pressure H2S blowout, where all recovery operations must be conducted while the well is burning.
Features include:
- Used to position a chimney over the well to redirect the flame, allowing workers direct access to the wellbore
- Well-capping operations may be undertaken without extinguishing the fire
- Hoisting capacity of 25,000 kilograms at a zero-degree (0°) boom angle
- Hastens recovery operations
- Ability to maneuver and place specialized cutting tools used to extract damaged equipment
